the challenge
The world of skincare is just as intricate as the anatomy of our own skin. There are countless skin conditions and concerns with hundreds of thousands of skincare products and/or procedures to follow. We have board-certified dermatologists and estheticians that can lend their expertise and get our skin concerns addressed — but oftentimes at a cost.
To discover the gaps in the current skincare app field, I gathered 10 participants for preliminary user interviews.
Key insights:
All participants valued having some sort of routine for their skin and commit time out of their day to apply their products
Though skincare knowledge varied, all participants desired a better understanding of the appropriate products to use
90% have an interest in using a platform to maintain their product inventory and bookkeep routines
user heuristics
skin savings
The revenue of the skincare market worldwide amounts to $130 billion USD. Now imagine the chunk of dollars spent on products having gone to waste because the product did not deliver results to the user.
With the information overload and consumerism around skincare products, users may purchase items that do not particularly serve them well or they may not have a thorough understanding of the ingredients in their products.
Women (from a HuffPost survey) were asked about how they went about selecting, securing, and using facial beauty products. Over 60% responded they make purchases from the back of treating skin concerns as their number 1 priority, second to that were products that had been recommended, and third, the ingredients in them.
opportunities to explore
Bridge the gap between costly professional expertise and the direct consumer via:
AI skin analysis — Give users an understanding of their current skin health
Remote skincare consultations — Extend the world of virtual services to skincare
Daily routine tracker with inventory — Let data analytics assist users with skincare consistency
Piggy-backing off on my general sitemaps and flows, I sketched out the main user flow that highlighted the key features for this MVP. I focused on how the app would look like when a user first downloads and navigates the main features — beginning with the onboarding tips and making way through their routines, inventory, consultation, and camera.

brand identity
Building the MVP from the ground up meant setting the tone and branding. I began this process by creating a mood board followed by a complete UI kit with the inspiration of colors, typography, and imagery to be included in the app. My vision was for the app to evoke an earthy, natural, and inviting tone.
the solution
Feature 1
a selfie with a purpose
Feature 2
convenient consultations
With easy scheduling, users can skip the commute to offices and consult with skincare experts on-the-go.
Using the AI camera in the PIBU app, users can allow the technology to analyze and retrieve current skin health and condition.
Feature 3
routine tracker
PIBU simplifies the users’ daily tasks by organizing their skincare routines and inventory.
supporting assumptions
The usability testing was structured based on 3 objectives:
To gauge the usability and convenience of the features in the MVP
To discover any frustrations or suggestions for improvised experience
To determine whether the MVP adds value to the user’s lifestyle
4 participants
In-person & remote usability testing
2 tasks: generate skincare routine and set up an appointment with a specialist
